Is Coding Bad for Screen Time? Finding the Right Balance for Children

Many parents worry that coding and technology-based activities will increase screen time - but when used in the right way, they can support creativity, confidence and real-world learning.

When many parents hear “coding club,” one of the first concerns is screen time.

It’s a valid question - children already spend a lot of time on devices, so does adding coding or technology-based activities make this worse?

The answer depends on how technology is used.

At Young Innovators, technology is just one part of the learning experience. While children develop digital skills through coding, robotics and creative platforms such as Minecraft Education, this is balanced with hands-on, practical activities that encourage them to think, build and collaborate beyond the screen.

For example, children might design a solution digitally, then work together to build or test ideas through real-world challenges. These types of activities introduce elements of engineering, problem-solving and teamwork, helping children develop a broader set of skills.

The focus is not just on using technology, but on how children think, create and solve problems.

This balanced approach helps children to:

  • develop confidence with technology
  • build creativity and independence
  • strengthen teamwork and communication skills
  • apply ideas in real-world contexts

Technology, when used in the right way, can be a powerful tool for learning - especially when combined with hands-on experiences.

At Young Innovators, we believe the best learning happens when digital skills are supported by creativity, curiosity and real-world exploration.
